Magazine 43 proudly presents Gagosian New York’s, Social Works.
Gagosian is pleased to present Social Works, an exhibition exploring Black social practice as it relates to space in the museum, the gallery, and the community. Social Works will feature paintings, sculptures, photographs, and installations by David Adjaye, Theaster Gates, Linda Goode Bryant, Lauren Halsey, Titus Kaphar, Rick Lowe, and Carrie Mae Weems as well as former NXTHVN Studio Fellows Zalika Azim, Allana Clarke, Kenturah Davis, Christie Neptune, and Alexandria Smith. This is the first exhibition curated by Antwaun Sargent since he joined the gallery as a director.
Social Works considers how space—both personal and public, psychic and institutional—can be generated through a Black imagination that is rooted simultaneously in history and futurity as a way to examine how art can transform society and its mechanisms of power. Despite the wide range of materials and theoretical approaches employed by the participating artists, they are united by a conscious engagement with today’s broader cultural moment, in which social and institutional factors have converged to increase the urgency for Black artists to expand their practices to include community-building and spatial empowerment.
