Woaw Gallery’s Queens Road space stuns us once again, this time with a collection of work by New York artist, Bianca Nemelc. In this Hong Kong heat with restricted overseas traveling, most galleries seem to have come about ‘summer themed’ exhibitions, “Sea, I’m Awake”, however seems to be the most promising, and most fittingly summery of all.
I walked in the gallery feeling like slimey slug, (as what most summers in Hong Kong would be like) disgusted with the sunblock and sweat running down my skin but went on straight away to do what I had to do and started browsing through the collection. I was immediately swept off of my feet. The dreamy, harmonious, almost-skipping-over-the-clouds kind of feeling gave me the chills. The movement of the work was flawless, like place filled of mysterious adventure, yet at the same time, familiar—somewhere that defines summer, the Carribean.
Nemelc’s work takes inspiration from her own heritage while reconnecting with her ancestral roots. It was indeed the perfect escape from the city (at least for a little bit), turning the space into a place of comfort, and balance of coexisting with nature. The very fluid composition, the simplicity of it all, and the earthy colours, made me feel so calm, sending me to a meditative state and that if stayed any longer I would start to get into a Savasana .
An exhibition worth a visit (or two), the kind we need to see, and one we can all relate to. Bianca Nemelc’s solo exhibition at Woaw Gallery’s Queen’s Road space will be on view through 14 September.
