A Gallery is pleased to launch a new addition of its space at 10 Raeburn Park, 01-13/01-21, Singapore 088702 as the gallery ushers the way in a continuing growth of the arts, education, sustainability, and diversity in Singapore with its upcoming opening group show on 24 June 2023.
Welcoming new beginnings, come great partnerships, and acceptance of a growing home for art and art lovers. The birth of A Gallery Singapore is brought together by a group of long-time friends, who come from different backgrounds, but with a common passion and love for art. Bringing art closer to people being the common purpose, Michael Leung and Alvin Chiu (founders of A Gallery Hong Kong), Diana The, Sherry Wong, and Yifei Li aim to not just present art as a visual experience, but to expand the knowledge of art in its context, while broadening exploration that is way beyond the books by making arts relatable and approachable––for people in Singapore from all walks of life, and all ages.
As one of the true meanings of art is to open the unknown, it also serves a continuous learning with its sole purpose of creating a positive impact on society. Sustainability incorporated into many ways–from the materials used, to a certain type of paint or paper, or even a concept or movement that raises awareness of living a more responsible, ethical life.
The Singapore art space will debut with “Breaking Boundaries” featuring works of international artists: Angel Hui, Alex Giles, Ghost Mountain Field, Jean-Philippe Duboscq, Joe Suzuki, Kayoko Kimura and Vibrant Cuckoo – all who work in diverse media and are connected by their interest in the interconnectedness of both history, purpose and visual culture while being able to tell their stories with new perspective via their art form.
One of the HK artists presenting, Angel Hui, creates art using plastic bags and puts into picture for people that art can come in so many different forms, which includes everyday objects that you can both see and feel and turning them into something extraordinarily soulful.
Alex Giles from Manchester, England, showcases paintings that are of reoccurring shapes influenced by subconscious snippets of memory, while inducing its viewers to a feeling of peculiarity, familiarity and even nostalgia. The artist’s practice is a combination of geometrical and gestural abstraction in a way that offers the viewers a bright, lively, and playfully simple distraction to the uncertain times that we live in.
Singapore-based, and Russian mixed media artist, Vibrant Cuckoo believes that her work is led by positivity while guided by colours. Each painting tells a story, aiming to provide light, turning negative to positive.
The delicate, yet striking works of Jean-Philippe Duboscq from Brussels, Belgium create an interesting world of ‘loud minimalism’ with its saturated colours, soft yet striking textures, and fluidity. Duboscq’s current work is linked to concepts of instability, chance, and the unexpected: he reveals what he cannot control or what escapes him. The segmented nature of his work allows different interpretations and at the same time enables new perspectives to emerge.
Joe Suzuki from the US, and Ghost Mountain Field, a Hong Kong artist are both inspired by their upbringing, where their multifaceted practice explores concepts of identity between pop culture and social traditions. Their works help empower inclusivity and diversity by bringing together both Eastern and Western practices.
Nomura Art Prize winner, Japanese artist Kayoko Kimura, will also be showcasing her paintings that constantly explore the identity of femininity and the concept of life and death in the opening show of A Gallery Singapore.
Art being a personal statement and the storyteller of both the artist and the collector, help them relay a clearer purpose of why it is not only a visual object, as there is meaning, and history behind every little detail—and that’s what makes it important. Being advocates of sustainability, inclusion, and diversity, A Gallery Singapore aims to support the growth of the local art scene and provide a platform for artists to express themselves.
A Gallery Singapore will launch its opening reception on 24 June 2023 from 1 pm to 6 pm at 10 Raeburn Park, 01-13/01/21, Singapore 088702 and run through 31 August.
