A True Story
AN EXHIBITION HOSTED BY THE NORDIC ART AGENCY OF BRITISH ABSTRACT ARTIST JO HUMMEL
Based in the Isle of Wight, the artwork of British artist Jo Hummel feels like a breath of fresh air. Trained at the Royal College of Art London, Jo and was hailed as ‘the next generation to turn its back on Emin and Hirst’s conceptual works by the Observer newspaper.
Hummel’s work is characterised by a painted and paper collaged surface on which she employs spontaneous variations of space, colour, and form.
A True Story unfolds into a poetic investigation into the relationships of line, form, and palette. The exhibition will feature an emotive selection of painted collaged painting in various scales.
I look to the world around me for solutions in making work. Modular systems, pattern, repeating motifs, symmetry, repetition, are all borrowed from industry, human habits, or landscape. And at the same time, I question the importance of such and what they can tell us about the human condition.
- Jo Hummel
The process of making is as significant as the outcome for Jo Hummel, as her practice functions as simulation of decision-making experiences which enables her to grasp and use sensations such as anxiety and serenity. The context is anthropological and inspired by human habits and behaviour with a special interest in free will and our formal concerns.
There is a natural and systematic ease to her work which allows each piece to feel dynamic yet at ease within itself. There is balance and unrest, opposition and harmony as Jo describes, “the flipping of forms to reveal alternatives.” The pastel, plastic colours and occasional monochrome elements used in her work create a satisfying sense of sugar-coated power, robust and structured yet feminine and undulating.
We are proud to represent Jo Hummel's work exclusively in the Nordics and hosted her first solo exhibition in Sweden in 2019. You can also listen to Jo Hummel in-conversation on the Nordic Art Agency Podcast with Juliet Rees-Nilsson, the founder of the Nordic Art Agency where she discusses her painting practice and inspiration.
